Plain Dealer 4/4/11- While some consumers may initially be alarmed by the trace amounts of mercury present in their CFL bulbs, the overall risk is minimal. In perspective, the amount of mercury households are exposed to by a broken bulb is much less than the amount polluted into the air by coal-fired power plants. CFL bulbs not only reduce electricity bills, they lower coal plant production. EHW’s Stu Greenberg noted: “The overall mercury exposure from coal-fired power plants is very substantially reduced by use of CFLs.” Read the Plain Dealer article here.
